The Futureback Method

Four skills that change how you work.

Consulting methods made practical. Top consultants aren't smarter than everyone else. They've been trained in a few simple habits. Futureback organises those habits into four skills anyone can learn, and one clear process for solving problems.

Futureback problem solving

From messy problem to clear action.

The four skills are what you get better at. This six-stage process is how you use them on a real problem, in the right order.

Most of the work sits in Think Better. The final stage, Recommend, is where Communicate Better takes over. Not every tool belongs to a stage: some help you work or use AI better, whatever you're doing. Browse tools by stage.

Think Better

Most bad decisions aren't caused by a lack of intelligence. They're caused by a lack of structure. Thinking better means breaking big, vague problems into parts you can actually work on, then focusing on the parts that matter.

Explore Think Better
  • Structure problemsTurn a vague worry into one clear question you can answer.
  • Break down complexitySplit a big problem into smaller parts with no gaps or overlaps.
  • Build hypothesesStart with a best guess, then test it. It's faster than boiling the ocean.
  • PrioritiseWork out which parts of the problem deserve your time first.
  • Analyse evidenceFind the few numbers and facts that would change your mind.
  • Make better decisionsCompare options honestly and commit to a call.
02 · Skill

Communicate Better

Good thinking is wasted if nobody understands it. Communicating better means leading with the answer, backing it up with a clear structure and making it easy for busy people to say yes.

Explore Communicate Better
  • Structure ideasGroup your points so the logic is obvious at a glance.
  • Tell clear storiesMove from situation to problem to answer, in that order.
  • Write executive summariesSay the most important thing in the first three lines.
  • Build better presentationsOne message per slide. The title tells the story.
  • Make recommendationsBe specific about what to do, who does it and by when.
  • Influence stakeholdersUnderstand what each person needs to hear before they agree.

Work Better

Being busy is easy. Being effective is harder. Working better means spending your limited time on the few things that move results, and running meetings, plans and projects with less waste.

Explore Work Better
  • Apply 80/20 thinkingFind the small share of effort that drives most of the result.
  • Prioritise workDecide what not to do, not just what to do next.
  • Plan effectivelyWork backwards from the outcome and the deadline.
  • Run better meetingsEvery meeting needs a purpose, a decision or a clear next step.
  • Manage stakeholdersKnow who cares, what they care about and how often to update them.
  • Facilitate workshopsGet a room of people from opinions to agreement.
  • Get things doneClose loops. Turn decisions into owners and dates.

Use AI Better

AI is a brilliant assistant and a poor boss. Using AI better means bringing the structure yourself, then using AI to research, draft, analyse and check faster. Good thinking first. AI second.

Explore Use AI Better
  • Accelerate researchGet up to speed on a topic in minutes, then verify what matters.
  • Structure thinkingUse AI to stress-test your issue tree or find missing branches.
  • Analyse informationSummarise documents and spot patterns without losing the detail.
  • Generate ideasWiden your options before you narrow them down.
  • Improve communicationTighten drafts, simplify language and test how a message lands.
  • Automate repetitive workHand off the routine steps so you can focus on judgement.
A note on AI

AI should amplify good thinking, not replace it.

AI can research, draft and analyse faster than any of us. But it can't decide what the real question is, or which trade-off is right for you. That's still your job. The Futureback Method keeps you in charge and lets AI do the heavy lifting.
